Here are some photos taken on a very overcast day in London last year.

Queen Victoria, Buckingham Palace

Florence Nightingale, Piccadilly

Eros, Piccadilly Circus

This was one of the greyest days ever - I went out at 10am andgot back home at 8pm but the sky made it seem like an all day night-time. it was great, even when I got soaked!

I put this block in the fire and noticed that it looked like a love heart on it so took a photo.

E-books?

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 11:39 AM
A while back, there was a series of strips about a man in the library with an e-book reader. The strips' take was... not favorable.

I got a Kindle for my birthday several months back. To me, it's like a thing out of legend. (An idea reflected in the rather neat handcrafted Kindle cover I purchased on Etsy.) I open it, and I can magically summon almost any book, the single page rewriting itself to become the proper text. I carry with me in one lightweight package a library of thousand-page tomes, short stories, and everything in between. Thanks to sites like Project Gutenberg and MobileRead, I have the classics - thousands and thousands of them - freely available at my fingertips.

And, of course, there are other perks. Instant, pop-up dictionary definitions on request. Mobile internet access - email, encyclopedias, information of all kinds. Also, Minesweeper and now GoMoku (Easter Eggs in the Kindle software).

My sister, on the other hand, hates the thing. It's not a proper book. You can't feel the pages. You don't get the real experience in the ancient and sacred tradition. You get a computerized simulation. Another step towards electronics taking over our way of life. And my access to the Gutenberg library has kept me from making trips to our actual, rather exceptional hometown library. I must admit she has some valid points.

Too, it's expensive. And, really, I can, in theory, just as easily download and read e-books on my laptop.

There's more to be said, I'm sure. What's your take?

Happy Feet and Julie Andrews

We're still in Philadelphia, even though we are not really. Yes, that is the power of blogs (and authors who have too much stuff to blog about!).

Last blog we were wondering to whom these famous shoes belonged to . . .

. . . and we will get to that. But first, this.

After an action/author-packed day, the next morning was the annual Scholastic Literary Brunch . . .

Everyone got cool swag, including books from each author reading at the event . . .

Peeps sat with the incredible Stick Man/Events-Author Program Queen Jacky Harper (who Holly Harper in BOBBY VS. GIRLS (ACCIDENTALLY) is named after), Dick Robinson, CEO, Chairman and President of Scholastic, Francisco Stork, and his editor (and mine) Cheryl Klein. Here, Jacky gifts Peeps with a flower . . .

Soon it was time for the authors to read from their latest masterpieces. Each author was introduced by Scholastic Library and Educational Marketing Guru John Mason. Patrick Carmen went first, followed by Maureen Johnson, Kathryn Lasky, Patricia McKissack (was unable to make it, so Jacky read for her), Maggie Stiefvater, Francisco Stork,

. . . and then Moi . . .

Here's what the beautiful/Nobel Prize caliber audience looked like . . .

It was a great end to a great time at a great convention . . .

Oh! Oh! Oh! Those shoes? Did you guess? Here's who those happy feet belong to . . .

(Justine Labalestier and Brian Selznick!!!)

And guess who was on the flight back to Los Angeles with me???? I'll give you a hint . . . JULIE ANDREWS!!!!! She had keynoted at NCTE. We had met once before, but I didn't want to bother her. However, I will post this photo of our last encounter. . .

If you were to open up a puppy's head - and I am not for a moment suggesting that you should - you would find nothing but an enormous drool gland.
